Apple is celebrating Accessibility Awareness Day throughout this week by unveiling a host of new features and services aimed at enhancing accessibility for users with varying abilities. This initiative encompasses a range of Apple services, including Fitness+, Apple Maps, and Apple Music, each offering tailored content and tools to foster inclusivity.

Enhanced Accessibility in Apple Stores

On May 19, Apple will introduce SignTime, a service that allows customers in Canada to communicate with interpreters via American Sign Language (ASL) in Apple Stores. This service is already available in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, utilizing ASL, British Sign Language (BSL), and French Sign Language (LSF) respectively. Furthermore, Apple Stores worldwide are hosting live sessions this week to educate customers on how to effectively use accessibility features available on their iPhones. Users can also find this instructional content on Apple Support's social media platforms.

New Shortcuts for Mac and Apple Watch

This week, an Accessibility Assistant shortcut is being added to the Shortcuts app on both Mac and Apple Watch. This innovative shortcut will provide users with recommendations for accessibility features tailored to their individual needs and preferences, making it easier than ever to customize their experience.

Inclusive Workouts for Wheelchair Users

Apple Fitness+ trainer Bakari Williams is set to utilize ASL during workouts to showcase accessibility features available to all users. Notably, Audio Hints will provide brief descriptive verbal cues for those who are blind or have low vision. Additionally, episodes of Time to Walk will be rebranded as “Time to Walk or Push,” while Time to Run will similarly adapt for wheelchair users. ASL will be integrated into all Fitness+ workouts and meditations, with each video featuring closed captioning in six languages, ensuring a broader audience can engage with the content. Trainers will also demonstrate modifications in each workout, allowing users of varying fitness levels to participate comfortably.

Exploring Nature with Apple Maps

Apple Maps is launching a new guide entitled Parks Access for All, designed to assist users in finding accessible features, programs, and services in parks across the United States. This initiative has been developed in collaboration with Gallaudet University, a notable institution dedicated to Deaf, Deafblind, and hard-of-hearing students. In addition, Apple Maps will spotlight businesses that are committed to serving the Deaf community, a topic highlighted by Tim Cook during his recent commencement address at Gallaudet.

Unique Sound Experiences with Apple Music

Apple Music is introducing “Saylist” playlists, where each playlist centers around a specific sound. While these playlists are particularly beneficial for individuals engaged in vocal practice or speech therapy, they are available for anyone to enjoy.

Additional Features and Offerings

Apple TV+ will showcase popular films and series that represent people with disabilities. Collections will feature notable actors from the accessibility community, including Marlee Matlin from CODA, Lauren Ridloff from Eternals, and Selma Blair from Introducing, Selma Blair. The App Store will highlight applications focused on accessibility, while Apple Books will present a new collection of stories from individuals with disabilities. Additionally, Apple Podcasts will feature discussions on how technology is progressing accessibility.
