Gemini’s Skills are bookmarks for your AI prompts

Bookmarks are an integral part of the web browsing experience, allowing users to easily save and access their favorite web pages. Google is now enhancing this concept with the introduction of a new feature in Chrome called Skills, which allows users to bookmark AI prompts. This feature is particularly useful for those who utilize generative AI tools like Gemini, making it easier to save and re-run prompts in the future.

Starting today, Google is rolling out the Skills feature for Chrome on desktop, providing users with a streamlined way to create and manage their AI prompts. To use this feature, users simply need to write a prompt while using Gemini within Chrome, save it as a Skill, and access it later as needed. The Skills are organized on a dedicated page, which includes both user-created Skills and a selection of Google-suggested Skills.

When it’s time to utilize a saved Skill, users can easily access it by opening Gemini in Chrome and typing a forward slash ("/") to bring up a drop-down menu. This menu displays the available Skills, making it quick and efficient to select and execute the desired prompt.

Among the suggested Skills provided by Google are practical tools such as “What’s in this?” for meal preparation and planning, a “Calendar creator” for organizing schedules, and a “YouTube transcript” option for generating transcripts from videos. Additionally, the “Hype it up!” Skill is designed to offer encouragement and motivation to users when needed.

While generative AI typically produces varied responses to identical prompts, Google acknowledges that variations may occur with Skills as well. A representative from Google stated, “Like all AI-generated responses, results may vary slightly between runs, similar to how asking someone the same question twice might yield a differently worded answer.” The company assures users that the Skills available in their library have undergone a review process for quality and reliability.

As users consider integrating Gemini into their daily routines, they may weigh it against other AI models such as ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude. Regardless of the choice, the Skills feature represents a thoughtful intersection of Google’s browser expertise and advancements in AI technology. While it may seem like a small convenience, the ability to bookmark Skills enhances the overall user experience by providing quick access to valuable AI tools.

In summary, Google’s new Skills feature in Chrome not only simplifies the process of interacting with generative AI but also empowers users to create a personalized library of prompts. This innovation caters to the growing demand for efficient and user-friendly AI solutions, making it an exciting addition to the Chrome browser.
