Oracle Slashes Thousands of Jobs While Doubling Down on AI Expansion

Oracle has commenced a substantial reduction in its workforce, cutting thousands of jobs as it navigates investor apprehensions surrounding its extensive investments in AI-related data center operations.

The enterprise software titan revealed plans for a significant ramp-up in expenditures linked to the development of its AI capabilities by 2025. This includes the ambitious $500 billion Stargate initiative, a collaborative project with OpenAI and SoftBank, which aims to be fully operational by the end of the decade. However, investor sentiment has turned negative, with many expressing concerns that Oracle may be overreaching in its quest to establish itself as a pivotal player in the burgeoning AI sector.

Reports indicate that the layoffs began on Tuesday, with Business Insider noting that more than a dozen Oracle employees publicly disclosed their job losses. Among those affected were software engineers, indicating that the cuts are occurring across various roles within the organization.

According to CNBC, “the layoffs were in the thousands,” highlighting the scale of the workforce reduction.

Shift in Corporate Sentiment

The atmosphere at Oracle has notably changed in recent months, evidenced by a 26 percent decline in its stock price this year, marking the steepest drop among major tech companies. Earlier in January, the company announced intentions to secure an additional $50 billion for data center and AI infrastructure investments, a move that was met with skepticism from investors. Subsequently, Oracle had to pledge to halt any further capital injections for the remainder of the year.

While Oracle has not publicly addressed the recent layoffs, earlier reports suggested that the company had been contemplating these cuts for some time. This decision aligns with the belief that advancements in AI technology may reduce the necessity for certain job roles.

These layoffs are part of a broader trend in the tech industry, with companies like Amazon, Salesforce, Meta, and Block Inc also announcing significant job cuts, frequently citing “AI efficiencies” as the rationale. Critics have accused these corporations of engaging in “AI washing,” using the narrative of technological advancement to justify layoffs that may have been premeditated.

Future of Oracle’s Data Center Investments

The recent job cuts do not imply that Oracle intends to scale back its ambitious data center investment plans. Both the company and its investors appear to be seeking increased operational flexibility. Oracle’s liabilities surged by an astounding 359 percent in 2025, reaching $455 billion, largely due to a $300 billion commitment to OpenAI.

Oracle is one of the three primary partners in the Stargate project, which is designed to generate seven gigawatts of data capacity to support AI workloads. The initiative will involve the construction of five new data centers across the United States, with construction already underway in Texas. The overall expenditure for this project is projected to reach $500 billion by 2030, with plans for an additional three gigawatts in subsequent expansions, contingent upon the growth of OpenAI and the wider AI market.

However, analysts have raised concerns regarding Oracle's potential overreliance on this high-stakes project, particularly since it does not rank among the top three data center providers in the U.S.

As reported by CRN, Oracle holds the fifth position in the cloud market, capturing approximately three percent of the share, trailing significantly behind industry leaders Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Recently, Microsoft moved to lease a data center that was initially associated with Oracle and earmarked for the Stargate expansion, further indicating a shift in competitive dynamics.
